The beach pajamas are done! I even secured the threads on the ends of the darts. I should probably whip the seam allowances, but eh.

On to more little things! Except for wanting another spring corset (with different straps), everything now is small.

Turquoise Dress Preview

I tried on the turquoise gala gown with everything (except jewelry) yesterday for the first time, and I am so in love with it. Like, I was so happy, I felt like I could cry. I'm pretty sure that's what brides feel like. And somehow, it fit even better than when I wore it in Port Townsend. So anyway, I marked where the hooks and eyes on the train waist needed to go, and how the sash needed to go together. I think I may need to pin the sash to my dress at the shoulder so that I don't adjust it all the time, but at least it looks right. And I took a couple of pictures, which was very difficult since I don't at all fit in the mirror.

Once I took it off, I finished the waistband and the sash, which means all my CoCo sewing is done! That said, I also spent a little time last night figuring out what pattern I wanted to use (and what alterations I wanted to make to the pattern) for a new Belle-inspired dress made of Beauty and the Beast stained glass cotton to wear to Disney. So hopefully I will have time to throw that together. It should be relatively easy (famous last words).

I also finished my handout for the class I'm teaching. I still have to cut out all the pieces I'm providing, and buy the supplies I need for the classes I'm taking, too, which will hopefully happen tomorrow.

Darn... I thought more people had made it over from LJ to here. Feels empty. Lot of missing people in my nearly empty reading list.

Well, Internet, that's two actually pretty good days in a row. Still pretty tired-tastic and mildly sore, but it has kept to that and I have been able to both work and do other things. It's a miracle.

Today was my own work, which was pleasant and of course led to the freelancer's cry of "I will never have work again!" (I am in fact waiting for an approval mid-commission.) Hopefully I'll be back to paying work again tomorrow, but if not, I wouldn't mind starting color on that mermaid drawing.

Things are difficult, but they are not terrible. (Something I often have trouble wrapping my brain around.)
To bed with me, and perhaps tomorrow I will be more interesting!

Blaaaa...

I wasted the entire night trying to get the turban for the beaded dress to work. To make myself feel better (or something) I tried wrapping the shawl that I've used as a turban before and wrapped it cutely in about a minute. I think trying to to it in voile or voile and silk was the issue. Oh well.

So I decided to go turbanless (I don't want the faux sequined shawl for this) and actually tried to do my hair. I never practice hair. But I found out that my tiny curling iron will curl my hair from straight, which is good. I may or may not wrap the strip of fabric I hemmed for the bird dress around my head. We will see.

The plan had been to make the pants for the beach pajamas. And fix the straps. I moved them a tiny bit after checking them and didn't check them again. Never a good plan!

But it's earlyish. I still may do something...

So, today I actually got my painting work done and it didn't take till it was time to go to bed. I should be doing other work in this time, but the relief of not having to keep slogging is enormous. We will see if I can bribe the executive function monster to let me do more than absolutely required.

In body news, I am not feeling horrible today! I hope that this decides to become a trend, because I have things to do. There's a winter coat to take apart for patterns, a murphy desk to build, bed risers to build, things to unpack, a desktop to set up, etc. This thing where I can only do like 1/3 of what I used to be able to is really getting in the way.

And sewing. Wow I really miss sewing.

And home again!

The Jane Austen Festival was wonderful. As usual, no recap, but it was so nice to see so many people! And Game of Thrones! And amazing food (vegetarian bahn mi and won ton soup, a whole vegetarian Chinese restaurant, and Ethiopian in addition to very yummy hummus filled picnics)! And I finished the bodice for the beach pajamas! Also, I still have a Snorlax in the Locust Grove gym :)

The trip home continued my streak of good travel luck--not only was [personal profile] jennil at the airport (it was so nice to have more time to catch up! It's been so long!) my flight got in half an hour early!

I've even unpacked and fixed the handle on my suitcase--the screw in the handle came out. It was easy--unzip the lining, find the missing bolt, and screw it back in. I also tightened the other screws since they weren't sticking out of the backs of the bolts.

Anyway, I'm very much in the mood to sew, but I think I only have machine sewing. But I might make the beach pajamas belt by hand to avoid turning a tube. I hate turning tubes more than just about anything sewing wise...

After a super productive Friday, I had no time at all for sewing yesterday, and didn't get much done today, either. I painted my order ribbon with two more narrow stripes down the sides (which is how it looks in the portrait, but not how the Order of Charles III ribbon actually is, so I decided to add to the wide stripe I had already painted). And while that was drying, I finished painting the medals. Such tiny details - I wish I had smaller brushes, because while I think I got the Starry Cross medal pretty darn close, I couldn't put much detail on the Charles III medal. And then I made the bow tops for them, and I put pin backs on so that they would be easily removable.

In the picture, the top one is the Order of the Starry Cross, which started as a cabochon backing for a pendant, an the bottom is the Order of Charles III, which was a blank gold medal.

I was hoping to be able to try on all the gala stuff, so that I could figure out the sash length and get the hooks and eyes on the train waist, but I ran out of time before rehearsal, so that will have to wait till Tuesday.

I also dug out my extant 1890s bodice with the huge sleeves, which I will be bringing to show my class, and washed the organdy so that I can cut out all the pieces for the students.

So here's a couple questions for the hivemind -
1) We're making an 1890s sleeve as part of my class. There are tons of 1890s sleeve shapes out there - should I do an 1890s upper sleeve puff, which would work either for an evening sleeve or paired with a lower sleeve, or should I do a leg-of-mutton sleeve? I'm leaning towards the former because they require less fabric.

2) Also, because there are so many sleeve shapes out there, I was thinking of providing drawings of a couple shapes in my handout, and not providing a huge paper pattern (especially since I will be doing all the fabric cutting ahead of time). Is this fairly normal for classes? I can't remember.

A familiar dress!

I decided to wear my red embroidered Regency this weekend. It was good to wear an old dress!

And the spring stays are my favorite ever. I didn't have to pin the dress down!

A short post because it's almost time for Game of Thrones. Aaaaaaa....

I'm a horrible picture taker...

I worked on CoCo stuff for the better part of 12 hours today. I'm feeling pretty tired, but at least I got a lot done!

Elizabeth Swann is completely done. Unfortunately, I found out that no one else in the Keira Knopely group actually managed to make anything, so I'm bummed about that, and I guess I'll just be completely random at the Social. I'll probably also use it for my Halloween costume, though, and I am happy with how it turned out, so I guess not all is lost.

Anyway, I started making the chemise for it yesterday afternoon, using McCalls 6817 as a base, but narrowing the skirt by about 28" at the hem. I had to piece the shoulder strap, because I was literally 1.5" short of fabric. (Of course, after I put it on, I realized it was 1.5" too long at the hem. And I lived dangerously, and didn't make a mockup. I wound up taking it in quite a bit at the side seam, and a little at the CB, and I changed the shape of the princess seams over the bust, since I am wearing it over my stays. But other than that, it went together quite smoothly. I'm not doing sleeves (at least, not yet), because I don't want the extra heat, so I have left the armseyes unfinished for now. I added a drawstring at the neckline, and the front spiral laces with eyelets going down to just above the hip.

I also finished the hook and eye at the waist of the skirt, and yesterday, I finished all the frogs/buttons/pickups on the overgown. And last night, I did one coat on my shoes, then I did the other coat and the finisher today, and put in the buckles.

But that wasn't all I did today! I also made my earrings for the gala gown, and the headpiece. For the headpiece, I took a circle of millinery wire, wrapped it in white velvet ribbon, and then dyed it turquoise. Then I added a huge triple bow of the turquoise ribbon, and a lace bow with hanging tails. It needed more, though, and many of those headpieces seem to have a piece that runs across the top of the bun or curls, so I took the leftover pleated ribbon from the train, and it fit perfectly! I also dyed some ribbon millinery flowers, which I will either fix onto combs or barrettes, or I will just twist into my hair, since they are on wires.

Oh, and I tried on Mary Poppins, and despite the weight loss, I don't need to move any hooks and eyes. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing... I'm thinking about possibly wearing my skating bustle on Friday to teach, though, and doing Mary Poppins and the pelisse on Sat or Sun. I still haven't decided what to wear when, but I should probably get on that.

So at this point, I think this is what is left:
-Make order sash and paint order medals for gala gown
-Try on gala gown so that I can put hooks and eyes at waist of train
-Prep class materials for my class
-Buy supplies for the classes I'm taking
-Make a skirt or dress for Disney, if time

I think that's it, but I'm sure I'll find other things that need doing. However, I'm definitely feeling more relaxed now.

So far...

I've been wearing the corset with springs for about an hour now, and so far so good. I think it's going to work! It's rather odd not having something around my stomach--this is a first in Regency costume :)

The Jane Austen Festival starts tomorrow! After an eventless trip, no delays, no unplanned shuttle buses, I'm ready. And Aubry and I have a fully stocked room of food too, of course. And went to a vegetarian restaurant.

Well, except for ironing. Ironing is definitely not ready...

Sleeve ruffles are done, and the lace has been sewn on the bodice. The only things I have left on the outer gown are the frogs/buttons, and the tacks on either side where the skirt is picked up. And of course, the whole chemise. Part of me really wants to start on the gala gown accessories, but I know I should really be finishing the chemise first. I've also decided that (assuming I have black leather paint in the stash), I'm going to paint my last pair of Kensingtons black. They've been sitting untouched for like four years, since I bought them, and since I already have one red pair and one patterned white and blue, I guess I may as well paint these black. Maybe I'll do that tonight, while procrastinating on the chemise...

Going, going, going...

I finished the suffragette embroidery. All that's left is the waist closure (marked) and basting it to the bodice.

The beach pajamas are also well underway. I have a tiny bit--the neckband to be exact--more before the bodice is just handwork. Amazingly, the pattern fit straight from the envelope. I just lengthened the hem a tiny bit. Hopefully I'll get to that in a bit :)

Stuff

I ran a bunch of errands today. I had to do stuff to get ready for CoCo like get American currency (the exchange rate right now isn't terrible, yay!), buy a hair donut as well as other weird stuff to put on my head, and get a new phone. I now have a brand new flip phone! I really loved my old one and want it to work, but it was from 2006 and on an EVDO network, so it was starting to not work and the battery was pretty much done. And I am still rebelling against smartphones. So I got to surprise the lady at the store by getting a new flip. My last couple of errands that I need to get done for CoCo that aren't sewing related are: get a long-distance text package and book the shuttle to and from the airport.

I also sewed all the snaps on the lace overdress and all it needs now is some hooks and eyes and a hem. First 2 pictures here without flash, the last one with flash. The lace and net are actually white, so the colours are truer in the last photo.

I spent the other day assembling my Regency petticoat, so now the front and back panels are sewn together, have pocket slits, and a CB slit for the closure. It still needs to be gathered to a waistband, have straps attached, and a hook and eye closure done. Hoping to get both of these items done this week.

Oh, and also, on Sunday, I had an event with local friends and have pictures of our picnic in the park, but no time at the moment for posting them.

Is anyone else a (past) CSA member? I just got an email touting their special members-only video interview with ... TD! Heh.

Yesterday I wrote a pretty good series of answers on veiling in ancient Greece - if it whets your appetite, you should definitely read all of Aphrodite's Tortoise on Academia.edu, it's so interesting. We don't visualize Greek women as fully wrapped in veils, really. I also ... engaged with someone about ... layering in medieval dress, and I left a pretty vague and non-specific set of answers, so if you know more than me about medieval dress (which is not hard), I'd love it if you took a glance and told me if I'm crazy.

My new phone finally came! I was refreshing the tracking page all day at work and then when I got home; while I ate dinner I allowed the computer to update, and when it was done it told me that the package had been left downstairs. Took me forever to get the sim card out of my old phone, remember that it's in a thing to make it fit a micro-SD slot, and get the film off the screen, but I did, and have everything but my reward cards signed in and set up. Very nice and smooth and fresh. I feel decadent.

I finished the cartridge pleating yesterday at lunch, and started on the hem. I was able to knock out about 2/3 of it at rehearsal last night, and I hope to finish it today at lunch. My frogs arrived, so I can sew those on, too. I also forgot that I still had the sleeve ruffles to do, but yesterday I tea-dyed the cotton gauze I bought, so I think I should be able to assemble those this afternoon between work and rehearsal (especially because I managed to finish mowing the lawn yesterday). There's also a little lace I want to sew on the bodice at the neckline. I'm thinking there might actually be the tiniest chance that I can finish all of that today, but I'm not sure.

I don't have rehearsal tomorrow night, so I should be able to come home from work and go straight into the chemise. I'm free Friday, too, so maybe there's a chance I could do it all by Friday night? That would be nice!

So, the number of things I did today? That was actually too many things. Sadly, it was just getting up at 7:30, letting the plumber in, walking through a grocery store, briefly being in a Barnes & Noble, eating at a restaurant, taking Mere to the beach, and driving back. But I'm kinda wrecked and I'm definitely not getting any work done today.

In good news, we should no longer have a sump pump spraying water under our apartment!

I probably could be done with it now, it just needs skirt closures and the skirt basted to the dress, but I knew I wanted beetle wing embroidery, so I started beetle wing embroidery. I was going to do a scrolly thing with smooth purl, but given that I've never done that before and I'd have to do it on the bodice itself, not in a hoop, I decided just spangles and beetle wings. Those I know don't have to have hoops! My two inch sample of sewing the purl down came out fine though :)
